El Pumarejo, one of the Barcelona area’s most distinctive independent cultural venues, has been forced to shut down after L’Hospitalet City Council issued an immediate suspension order on its activities.

The non-profit association, focused on music and the performing arts, announced in a statement that the decision arrived without warning and obliges them to cancel all scheduled programming. Founded in 2015 in Barcelona’s Vallcarca neighbourhood and relocated to L’Hospitalet in 2019, El Pumarejo has become a hub for alternative and underground culture.
Its closure leaves the metropolitan area with one fewer independent stage, a blow to musicians, artists and audiences who value spaces outside mainstream cultural circuits. The association has not specified how long the shutdown might last, but insists it hopes to reopen once the suspension is lifted.
