The Raval neighbourhood has witnessed another commercial opening with UAO!, a new establishment on Carrer de Maria Aurelia Capmany 15, dedicated to affordable second-hand clothing.
“We’ve chosen Raval because it’s a neighbourhood with great variety, a large community of interested neighbours, and people who want to give clothing a second life without spending an entire salary,” explains Davide Matera, the shop’s founder.
The new store forms part of a unique ecosystem that has chosen this Ciutat Vella neighbourhood, where sustainable and vintage fashion serves as a powerful commercial attraction. Unique shops, markets, and workshops promote a responsible consumption model that increasingly attracts both residents and visitors.
Faced with ecological, economic, and social crises, this approach has become an essential response. Raval provides this solution, with growing numbers of establishments, conscious consumers, and creative projects demonstrating alternative consumption methods.
“Buying second-hand in Raval means reducing environmental impact, extending garment lifecycles, and supporting local projects working with passion and commitment,” notes Jordi Borda, manager of Raval’s Commercial Axis.
Shops and workshops led by entrepreneurs with distinct personalities are transforming how people dress and consume, offering alternatives to fast fashion whilst championing proximity and creativity. Raval establishments recover aesthetics from the 70s, 80s, 90s, and even Y2K style.
Notable establishments include Aranya Barcelona (C/Riera Baixa, 11) and Nerve Vintage (C/Peu de la Creu, 28), alongside Ecometas (C/Lluna, 1), specialising in ecological underwear and natural fabrics, and Novedades (C/Peu de la Creu, 24), creating unique handmade pieces. Fauzia Ropa (C/Sant Pau, 41) offers a window into cultures from around the world.
Santi Aranya, a sector pioneer and Aranya Barcelona’s manager, recalls that Riera Baixa “was Barcelona’s first vintage fashion street”.
