Getting locked out of your home is stressful enough without the sting of a predatory invoice. According to new data from the sector’s leading guild in Catalonia, the average price for an emergency locksmith service is approximately €102. However, experts are warning consumers that unscrupulous operators are charging as much as €1,000 for the same job.
While locksmith rates in Spain are not formally regulated by law, indicative rates established by industry professionals provide a stark contrast to the exorbitant fees demanded by ‘pirate’ locksmiths. Therefore, understanding the official averages is crucial for consumers.

Official Average Emergency Locksmith Costs
The Gremi de Serrallers de Catalunya Any 1380 (Locksmiths Guild of Catalonia) conducted a study across 250 associated companies to establish a baseline for fair pricing. The findings offer a clear guide for consumers worried about being overcharged:

- Standard Hours (Mon-Fri, 8am-8pm): The average cost is €71 plus VAT. Most reputable quotes fall between €60 and €125.
- Emergency Hours (Nights/Weekends): The average cost rises to €102 plus VAT. Standard rates typically range between €100 and €135.
- Additional Costs: Travel fees may be added, and 24-hour services may vary depending on the specific time of the call-out.
The €1,000 Emergency Locksmith Scam
Despite these reasonable averages, the market is plagued by intrusion from unqualified opportunists. Jesús González, president of the Guild, told El Periódico that scammers advertising via aggressive street stickers or online ads are charging between €500 and €1,000 for emergency openings.
The issue goes beyond pricing. Legitimate professionals are trained to open doors cleanly, often manipulating the lock without damaging it. In contrast, scam operators frequently destroy the hardware unnecessarily.
“Opening a lock is cheap; the cost comes when they break the cylinder and you have to replace it with a new one,” explains González.
He notes that many of these operators lack proper training. Consequently, they rely on YouTube tutorials to learn destructive entry methods that generate higher repair bills for the homeowner.

Combating Digital Fraud in Locksmith Services
The problem of inflated pricing became so acute that tech giant Google took action in September 2024. This move suspended locksmith service advertisements in Spain. It was designed to stop the bidding wars that pushed scam artists to the top of search results, lending them a veneer of legitimacy they did not deserve.
However, the threat remains. The Guild reports that false professionals often lack a physical shop and issue fake invoices. As a result, it is nearly impossible for consumers to reclaim their money through consumer rights organisations.
How to Protect Yourself from Locksmith Scams
To avoid falling victim to these practices, the Guild advises citizens to rely on locksmiths registered with recognised federations or associations. These professionals guarantee their work and commit to arbitration systems if disputes arise.
“We have received complaints from people with very high bills from locksmiths who do not belong to the Guild,” González notes. “I urge them to take the case to court if they feel scammed.”
