A young basking shark, an endangered species, appeared in Barcelona's Port Olímpic on Sunday, 19 April, captivating onlookers. The animal swam along the port's quay, astonishing curious onlookers who filmed the moment.
Rare Marine Visitor in Barcelona
Marine science communicator Juan Carlos García explained on Instagram that experts recognise this shark by its fin shape and size. He noted it is the second largest fish globally. García emphasised the privilege of its presence in Barcelona's waters.
He also detailed that basking sharks pose no threat to humans. They feed on plankton, filtering many litres of seawater each minute through their enormous mouths. The communicator highlighted Barcelona's significant marine biodiversity.
Preserving Barcelona's Marine Life
This follows recent sightings of dolphins and even whales off the Catalan capital's coast. García described these occurrences as "incredible". He concluded, "Sometimes we associate Barcelona with rubbish and pollution, but we also have a lot of marine life that we must preserve."
Juan Carlos García advised the public to call 112 when they observe such an animal. This activates tracking protocols. He stressed the importance of observing with respect and maintaining a safe distance. This prevents interference with the shark's natural behaviour.
