Barcelona’s commercial sector shows increasing use of English language signage, with one in seven shops now displaying English storefront text according to municipal survey data released this week. The 2024 Commercial Activity Survey indicates 13.5% of Barcelona establishments currently use English in their signage, representing the highest historical level recorded. Meanwhile, Catalan-language signage has decreased to 65.4% of establishments, down eight percentage points from two years ago. Spanish remains the second most common language for commercial signage at 24.1%. These findings come from comprehensive research conducted among 2,411 shop owners and managers across the city.

Language Trends in Retail
Commercial signage patterns reveal significant linguistic shifts within Barcelona’s retail landscape. The survey data shows English usage has increased from 11.6% last year to its current 13.5% level. However, shop staff demonstrate stronger Catalan language capabilities than their hospitality counterparts. According to the Commercial Activity Survey of Barcelona 2024, 76.5% of retail employees speak Catalan while 89.7% understand it. These figures contrast sharply with restaurant and bar staffing patterns detailed in a separate recent demographic study.

Hospitality Sector Challenges
The hospitality industry faces more pronounced language challenges according to parallel research. The Restaurant Sector Activity Survey 2024 shows 47.6% of bar employees cannot speak Catalan, while 24% don’t understand the language. This represents the lowest recorded level of Catalan proficiency among hospitality workers in the survey’s history. The data specifically focuses on establishments with fewer than ten employees to prevent larger venues from skewing averages. Meanwhile, demand patterns show 81% of businesses report customers who speak Catalan, indicating a service gap between client needs and staff capabilities. Language availability also varies significantly across service sectors. Approximately 93.3% of businesses can provide service in Spanish, compared to 76.3% offering Catalan-language service and 39.7% providing English assistance. Only 8.5% can accommodate French-speaking customers. These service capabilities don’t fully align with customer demand patterns, as 46.1% of establishments receive requests in English while 14.8% encounter French-speaking clients. The surveys were conducted by municipal authorities through direct interviews with business owners and managers. Join our WhatsApp broadcast channel to get all of the news delivered to you
