A significant Esplugues gas leak has left the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital without fuel and forced hundreds of students into lockdown. Emergency services evacuated a nearby sports centre on Monday afternoon while technicians worked to secure the area.

The incident began just before 13:00 when a pipeline was perforated during roadworks at the junction of Avinguda de Lluís Companys and Avinguda de Puig i Cadafalch. Fire crews deployed eight units to the scene to manage the risk. This deployment is consistent with the latest Catalan firefighters’ annual report showing increased interventions across the region.

Esplugues Gas Leak: Hospital and Homes Lose Supply

Nedgia, the gas supply company, confirmed that 330 customers are currently without service. This outage includes the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital, a critical medical facility in the metropolitan area. The disruption highlights the critical infrastructure challenges affecting Spain’s energy networks, both for gas and electricity. While the leak itself is now controlled, the council stated that the supply will remain cut off until total repairs are completed.

According to reports from El Periódico, the damaged section of the pipe has been sealed. Local authorities described the incident as “low risk” despite the disruption to services.

Esplugues Gas Leak: Lockdown and Evacuations

Police and fire services acted quickly to secure the perimeter. The coordinated response was similar to the one seen during the recent emergency landing at Barcelona El Prat Airport, which also required a multi-agency operation. Authorities ordered the confinement of the Isidre Martí school and the La Mallola residence as a precautionary measure. Although initial gas detection tests inside the educational centre returned negative results, officials maintained the lockdown to ensure student safety.

The Les Moreres municipal sports complex was fully evacuated. Meanwhile, police officers, including the Mossos d’Esquadra and local units, closed traffic in the surrounding streets to facilitate the repair work.

The Esplugues City Council confirmed that no injuries have been recorded. Therefore, parents were advised against collecting children early, with the school dismissal scheduled to proceed normally at 16:30.
