Barcelona will transform four urban parks by stripping away concrete and asphalt to create wilder, climate resilient spaces. The €3.3 million project is co-financed by the European Union, which is contributing €1.3 million, about 40 per cent of the total cost.

The initiative targets the Bateries and Escales Forestier on Montjuïc, Parc del Poblenou, Parc del Guinardó and Parc del Turó de la Peira. The aim is to link the city’s green areas into corridors that connect either with the sea or the Collserola mountains.

From 2026, tenders will be launched for works that include planting native trees and shrubs, removing invasive species, and replacing lawns with meadows. Measures will also focus on creating refuges for biodiversity, installing bird and bat boxes, and ensuring accessibility and inclusive design. The new landscapes are expected to open about three years after construction begins.
