Mossos d’Esquadra arrested a 39-year-old man for stealing 52,000 euros from a Barcelona gaming hall where he used to work. The bloke knew exactly what he was doing.

The theft happened on 24th April. Owners noticed something odd straight away. There was no forced entry and the alarm didn’t go off. Nevertheless, someone had accessed the premises and nicked 52,000 euros from the cash collection box.

Security footage showed a man heading straight for the cash box. However, he’d disguised himself with a raincoat, umbrella, hat and mask to avoid recognition. The thief covered cameras with his umbrella and, in some cases, insulating tape. This made investigators suspect an inside job.

A brief investigation revealed the truth. Before being sacked, one worker had changed the security codes on a safe. He’d set his birthday as the password. Moreover, he’d created alarm deactivation codes to access the premises undetected.

After months of investigation, police set up a tracking and arrest operation on 2nd October. When they raided his home, officers found 9,000 euros in cash. This was presumably part of the stolen money. Meanwhile, the rest has probably been spent.

The 39-year-old appeared before a judge on Saturday, 4th October. The case shows why businesses need to change all security codes immediately after staff leave. However, hindsight’s always perfect.
