A father suffered serious injuries after a brutal, organised assault by a group of youths at a children’s football match in Santa Coloma de Gramenet on Sunday. The attack, involving iron bars and extendable batons, occurred when the man defended his family from racist abuse directed at his son, the visiting team’s goalkeeper.

The violence erupted at the Nou Municipal stadium during a preferential youth category match between home side, Fundación Esportiva Grama, and visiting Unificación Bellvitge. According to witness accounts shared on social media, a group of young FE Grama ‘supporters’ subjected the Unificación Bellvitge goalkeeper to persistent racist insults throughout the first half.
The visiting team’s coach reportedly alerted the referee to the abuse. Consequently, officials moved the group to another section of the stands in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. However, tensions flared again around the 67th minute when someone pushed the goalkeeper’s sister, prompting their father to intervene.
A Coordinated Attack
The father’s intervention immediately triggered what witnesses described as a planned assault. A group of between 10 and 15 youths then attacked the family and other Unificación Bellvitge players with weapons. This coordinated violence raises ongoing concern, especially as the Mossos are investigating other brutal group attacks in Barcelona.
The father bore the brunt of the violence; attackers struck him repeatedly with bars and fists even after he had fallen to the ground. An eyewitness told Metrópoli Abierta, which first reported the story, that “if the assault on the father had lasted a minute longer, they could have killed him.” The use of such weapons by young people is a worrying trend, similar to a recent incident where the Mossos seized weapons from youths at Horta Metro station.
An ambulance rushed the victim to the Hospital Esperit Sant. Medical staff diagnosed him with a fractured nose, burst blood vessels in both eyes, and two deep gashes on his head that may require surgery.
Crucially, some alleged aggressors also attended the same hospital for injuries sustained in the brawl. Police identified them at the facility, leading to the arrest of four minors.
Clubs and Federation Under Scrutiny
In the aftermath, Unificación Bellvitge released an official statement blaming the officiating team for the incident. The club accused the referees of making “no case” of their warnings about the racist abuse and for failing to implement the federation’s anti-violence protocol. They have demanded more robust and decisive action from the Catalan Football Federation (FCF) to prevent future verbal and physical assaults.
For its part, the home club, FE Grama, has cooperated with authorities but stated the attackers are “unaffiliated with the club.” It described the group as part of the “entourage” surrounding its B-team, which was playing in the match.
This violent episode is the latest to plague Catalan grassroots football. It comes just eight days after an assault on a referee during a match in Canet de Mar. The escalating violence has put immense pressure on the FCF to act. In a related development, league officials recently took the drastic step to halt all futsal matches across Catalonia after another referee was attacked, signalling a growing crisis in local sport.
