Train services at Barcelona’s historic Estació de França were thrown into disarray on Saturday morning after a fault paralysed several Rodalies lines for over two hours.

The incident began around 8:30 a.m., affecting lines R13, R14, R15, R16 and R17, which all originate at the station. Passengers reported widespread delays as technicians from Adif rushed to diagnose and repair the problem. By 10:45 a.m., services were gradually restored across the network.

Rodalia’s official account on X confirmed the disruption and its resolution, thanking travellers for their patience. Adif has not yet detailed the precise cause of the failure, though it required urgent intervention from maintenance teams.

The Estació de França, one of Barcelona’s architectural landmarks and still a key hub for regional trains, has faced repeated calls for upgrades as reliability concerns mount across the Catalan rail system. While the morning’s disruption was relatively brief, it highlighted the vulnerability of ageing infrastructure at one of the city’s flagship stations.

The Generalitat and rail operators have been under increasing pressure from passenger associations to invest more heavily in modernising Rodalies. Critics argue that incidents such as this — though resolved quickly — reveal systemic weaknesses that affect commuters daily.

For the thousands of passengers who experienced delays, Saturday’s breakdown was yet another reminder of the need for sustained investment in Catalonia’s railways.
