Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat (FGC) announced its new R-Aeroport train line will start operating in the first half of 2027. This development will provide a direct rail link to Barcelona-El Prat Airport, a critical transport hub for the region.

Carles Ruiz, President of FGC, stated the public Catalan company currently awaits the completion of tunnel works. After this, FGC needs time to run and test the trains, verify their operation, and homologate them in collaboration with train drivers. This process ensures safety and efficiency for the new service.

Ruiz acknowledged the difficulties in finding sufficient time and space for these essential tests. "Setting exact dates is very difficult, however, in principle, it would start operating in the first half of next year," he told El Periódico. The ongoing works by Administrador de Infraestructuras Ferroviarias (ADIF) present a challenge for scheduling these crucial trials.

Testing Challenges Ahead

The R-Aeroport line marks FGC's second operation on ADIF infrastructure, where Renfe services also run. FGC is actively developing the necessary protocols for this shared use. The company prioritises clear passenger information systems, which are key to the service.

FGC is also studying how to integrate its information systems with Renfe's operations. This coordination aims to provide a smooth and consistent experience for passengers. The new line will significantly enhance public transport options for millions of residents and tourists travelling to and from Barcelona-El Prat Airport, one of Europe's busiest airports.

Boosting Barcelona's Airport Connectivity

The introduction of the R-Aeroport line will offer a faster and more reliable connection to the airport. This will reduce reliance on existing bus and taxi services, providing a more sustainable travel option. The project shows Barcelona's ongoing efforts to improve its urban and regional transport network.

Looking ahead, the 2027 launch aims to provide a modern and efficient rail link. This will benefit both daily commuters and international visitors, strengthening Barcelona's position as a well-connected European city.
