A fin whale, estimated at 18 metres long, was spotted recently off the coast of Barcelona. This sighting marks the first recorded fin whale appearance in the area this year. The encounter occurred on Friday, 10 April, approximately 19.3 kilometres from the city's port.
Henrik Wergeland captured the moment on video. This event highlights the increasing frequency of large marine mammal sightings in Catalan waters. Fin whales are the second-largest whale species globally. They can grow up to 27 metres in length and weigh as much as 70 tonnes.
Increasing Whale Sightings
These majestic marine giants have been observed more often in recent years. Some sightings have occurred less than 1.6 kilometres from the coast. This includes areas near Barcelona and in the Baix Llobregat. This marine corridor is crucial for these species. They use these waters as part of their migratory routes, searching for food. The first recording of the season suggests similar scenes may repeat in the coming months.
Barcelona's Marine Corridor
Residents and visitors could witness more fin whales near Barcelona's beaches. Additionally, dolphins were recently filmed swimming off Badalona beach, further indicating active marine life. Barcelona's coastal waters form part of a vital marine corridor. This area supports the migration and feeding of various cetacean species. The increasing number of sightings underscores the ecological importance of this region. It also offers a unique opportunity for marine conservation efforts. Protecting these waters ensures these magnificent creatures can continue their journeys safely.
