This highly anticipated ranking evaluates the country’s top national and international schools, recognising those that demonstrate exceptional standards in academics, innovation, and student development. Notably, the inclusion of nine local institutions underscores the diverse and competitive educational landscape available to families in Catalonia.
The Rigorous Selection Process
Securing a place on the annual Forbes list is no simple feat. An expert committee of pedagogical, psychological, and educational professionals scrutinises each school. This process follows a report from El Periódico, which details how the panel assesses institutions against 36 objective criteria grouped into seven key areas.
These criteria encompass the curriculum and subjects offered, language instruction, student-to-teacher ratios, accessibility for students with disabilities, average academic results, and post-secondary education options like the International Baccalaureate (IB). Furthermore, the committee considers monthly fees and overall facilities to provide a comprehensive evaluation.
A Concentration of Excellence
Many of the lauded schools sit in the Baix Llobregat comarca, located just southwest of Barcelona city.
The British School of Barcelona, for instance, operates campuses in Castelldefels, Sitges, and Barcelona, with a new campus planned for Cabrera de Mar in the Maresme region next academic year. Offering an education entirely in English, the British government recently awarded the school an ‘Outstanding in all categories’ rating following an official inspection in 2024.
Also located in Baix Llobregat is La Miranda in Sant Just Desvern. This private school particularly stands out for its technological innovation, having earned the coveted Apple Distinguished School recognition for its seamless integration of technology in the classroom. La Miranda provides a multilingual education with English, Spanish, and Catalan as core languages, supplemented by options including French, Chinese, German, or Russian.
Other notable schools in the area include:
- Agora Barcelona International School in Sant Esteve Sesrovires is a private, non-denominational institution offering a trilingual project in English, Catalan, and Spanish, with an option for a fourth language.
- Highlands School Barcelona, located in Esplugues de Llobregat, is a private Catholic school that enables pupils to study fully in English while maintaining Spanish, Catalan, and French. Monthly fees here range from €700 to €1,000.
- The British College of Gavà focuses on three pillars – academic, sporting, and creative – to foster students’ potential. Annual fees typically range from €9,000 to €15,000.
Beyond Baix Llobregat
Excellence extends beyond Baix Llobregat to other parts of the province. Colegio Internacional Sek Catalunya, situated in La Garriga (Vallès Oriental), stands out for its international mindset, personalised teaching, and robust programmes for high-performance athletes and musicians.
In Sant Cugat del Vallès, the European International School of Barcelona offers a humanist and ecological project with programmes specifically tailored to each student. Meanwhile, St. George Barcelona delivers a high-quality British curriculum emphasising experiential learning, with annual fees ranging from €11,350 to €21,340.
Finally, St. Peter’s School in Barcelona city distinguishes itself by immersing children in English from their first year and through its progressive focus on “exponential content” like artificial intelligence, combining academic rigour with a global outlook.
Hallmarks of Top-Tier Education
A common thread among these elite institutions is their commitment to global perspectives and holistic development. Most offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, a qualification recognised by universities worldwide. Multilingualism also stands as a cornerstone, with English-language instruction or robust trilingual programmes being standard.
These schools also boast extensive facilities, including libraries, laboratories, sports grounds, school gardens, and even student residences. This focus on premium private education exists alongside a complex public and charter school system, which recently received a significant €390 million funding injection for its ‘escoles concertades’. Ultimately, Forbes’ recognition underscores the breadth of educational choices available in the region, catering to a diverse and international community.
