Police sources indicate that three of the suspects distracted the tourist while a fourth violently ripped a gold chain from his neck. Subsequently, another thief stole a second chain from the victim.

Dramatic Escape Attempt Leads to Arrests

The group then fled the scene in a taxi. However, their escape took a dramatic turn when one of the suspects began choking on one of the stolen gold chains during the journey. Consequently, the taxi driver alerted emergency services via the 112 number.

While the other alleged thieves attempted to help their companion, one managed to dislodge the chain from his throat. Meanwhile, Mossos d’Esquadra patrols responding to the emergency call quickly discovered evidence of the robbery.

During a police search, officers located the second stolen gold chain. Therefore, all four individuals were arrested on suspicion of robbery with violence and causing injuries. The two gold chains were subsequently returned to the tourist.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about street crime in popular tourist areas. Furthermore, it demonstrates how emergency responses can inadvertently lead to solving other crimes. The swift action by both the taxi driver and police ensured the recovery of the stolen property.

Barcelona continues to implement various security measures across its districts. This recent arrest follows other local developments, including transport infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing public safety and accessibility. Additionally, the city has seen innovative trials of new transport technologies to modernise urban mobility.

The Barcelona robbery suspects now face formal charges as the judicial process begins. Meanwhile, authorities remind visitors to remain vigilant with valuable items in public spaces, particularly in high-traffic coastal areas frequented by tourists.
