One of Barcelona's best-kept secrets for residents and visitors alike is the first Sunday free museum programme. On the first Sunday of every month, many of the city's top cultural institutions waive their entrance fees entirely.

Which museums are free?

The following museums participate in the first Sunday programme: MNAC (Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya), Museu Picasso, MACBA (Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona), Museu d'Història de Barcelona (MUHBA), Museu Etnològic i de Cultures del Món, and the Jardí Botànic.

Tips for making the most of it

Arrive early. The most popular museums — particularly the Picasso Museum and MNAC — see long queues from mid-morning. The Picasso Museum opens at 10:00 and queues can form from 09:30. MNAC's rooftop terrace alone is worth the visit and is usually less crowded than the main galleries.

Some museums require advance booking even for free admission — check each museum's website the week before.
