The Catalan government has announced that free Rodalies travel (official info) will be extended indefinitely. This decision comes amid a severe rail crisis, with the network described as being in a ‘deplorable state’. Consequently, passengers will not be charged until the system is fully restored.
Minister for Territory, Sílvia Paneque, confirmed the decision after recent inspections revealed the railway infrastructure is in a far worse condition than initially feared. Therefore, the original plan to end the measure in late February has been scrapped.

Free Rodalies travel extended due to system under siege
The free travel scheme was originally introduced on Monday, 26 January. Authorities believed this one-month window would stabilise the Catalan railway system. However, a catastrophic week included a fatal accident in Gelida, multiple landslides, and a control centre collapse.
Over 500 inspections have identified approximately 30 ‘black spots’ across the network. These critical faults currently prevent trains from using the R3 line to Puigcerdà. Additionally, they block regional routes from Reus towards Terres de l’Ebre and Valls.
Minister Paneque described the situation as a ‘chain of concatenated effects’. Meanwhile, she defended her department’s response, insisting they prioritised passenger and driver safety above all else.
Partial reopenings with severe restrictions for free Rodalies travel (official info)
Despite the gloom, two network sections reopened yesterday. The R4 line between Terrassa and Manresa reopened. Furthermore, the R1 and RG1 lines between Blanes and Maçanet Massanes also resumed service.
However, service is far from normal. Adif technicians now monitor slopes and trenches 24 hours a day. Many of these have been hastily reinforced with metal mesh.
Renfe has implemented a shuttle service on these recovered sections. Passengers must alight and board another train at specific points. This process significantly increases travel times. Moreover, safety-mandated speed restrictions have slashed service frequency. Trains run only once an hour between Blanes and Maçanet Massanes. Similarly, they run every 90 minutes between Terrassa and Manresa.
Given the fragility of the restored lines, alternative bus services will continue as a necessary backup.
Freight lifeline restored amid free Rodalies travel (official info) extension
In a crucial development, freight trains have resumed circulation through the Rubí tunnel. Emergency engineering works stitched a fissure in the tunnel structure using steel plates.
This repair allows for the recovery of the international gauge entry and exit for the Port of Barcelona. This vital logistical artery had been severed for two weeks, causing significant economic losses.
