The average funeral service in Catalonia now costs between €4,300 and €4,500. This marks a significant increase from 2020 figures, according to the Catalan Funeral Services Association (Asfuncat) report released Wednesday.

The last published data came from a 2020 Barcelona Provincial Council study. Back then, the average price was €3,300. However, including cremation as the final destination pushed costs to €4,300.

Current prices reflect about 10% to 12% more than inflation increases alone, explained Asfuncat president Josep Maria Mons. Therefore, we’re talking about €4,300 or €4,500 now, he noted.

Cremations now represent 51.8% of the over 58,000 services provided last year. Moreover, this is 1.2 percentage points higher than 2022. Mons attributes the rise to changing societal attitudes.

People increasingly think it’s much easier to manage ashes than having relatives buried in a cemetery, he said. The practical benefits appeal to many families.

Meanwhile, secular ceremonies continue their upward trend. They’re up four-tenths of a percentage point from 2022. Mons explains that society has fewer religious beliefs these days. Additionally, non-religious services offer more personalisation options.

There’s the option to have a non-religious ceremony with equal dignity and more direct treatment of the deceased, he pointed out. Families can customise these services to reflect the person’s life and values.
