A major push for economic resilience is underway in the Barcelona metropolitan area, with Sant Feliu de Llobregat unveiling plans for a new innovation district expected to generate around 9,000 jobs.

The initiative follows a wider trend among neighbouring cities such as L’Hospitalet, Badalona and Esplugues, all of which are positioning themselves in sectors from biomedical research to the audiovisual industry. The Covid-19 crisis exposed the fragility of certain industries when global markets stalled; municipalities across the region have since been eager to diversify and attract long-term investment.

Sant Feliu’s project focuses on transforming its industrial zones into a hub for healthcare, electronics and textiles. Local officials argue that a specialised district will not only draw new companies but also retain talent that might otherwise relocate abroad. If successful, the plan could reinforce the metropolitan economy against future downturns, while also raising the profile of Baix Llobregat as a centre of innovation.

The district is still in the planning stages, but the scale of the project makes it one of the most ambitious undertakings in the area in recent years.
