Minister Sílvia Paneque has confirmed that Garraf tunnels maintenance on the Rodalies R2 South line will start this March. This decision accelerates the schedule in response to recent service incidents. Therefore, the Government is prioritising safety and reliability for this crucial railway link.

Paneque, the Minister of Territory and Government spokesperson, addressed the necessity of the intervention after meeting local mayors. The meeting took place at the Garraf County Council headquarters in Vilanova i la Geltrú.

Garraf Tunnels Maintenance Prioritises Safety

The Government decided to bring the start date forward to March due to recent incidents. Consequently, addressing vulnerabilities in the tunnel section is now a priority. However, a specific start date remains unconfirmed. Paneque assured stakeholders that the schedule will be agreed with the local community first. This consultation aims to minimise disruption for affected territories.

Alternative Transport Plan for Commuters

Crucially, an alternative transport plan will accompany the Garraf tunnels maintenance. Details will be finalised alongside the construction schedule. Meanwhile, the department is developing a broader “shock plan” for Catalonia. This €21 million initiative aims to secure rail network frequency and capacity.

Paneque acknowledged significant pressure from rapid economic and demographic growth in the Garraf area. Therefore, robust infrastructure is essential for the region’s future. In addition, a dedicated Adif team to manage Rodalies infrastructure is crucial to address these concerns effectively.
