Gaudí Cycle educational project continues expanding its mission to introduce Catalan cinema to teenagers across the region.

The initiative specifically targets young people aged 12 to 18 in member towns of the Gaudí Cycle network, fostering cultural appreciation and creative development through film.
Gaudí Cycle Expands Cultural Horizons
Beyond simply watching films, the programme encourages reflection and dialogue about social, cultural and human issues portrayed on screen. Furthermore, it introduces many young people to their local cinema for the first time. The Catalan Film Academy designed this project to showcase homegrown cinematic talent while revealing the diverse professional roles behind movie production.

These often-unknown careers can spark vocational interests among adolescents. Additionally, they help young viewers notice different aspects of the featured films. Students explore costume design in ‘El mestre que va prometre el mar’, voice acting in animated feature ‘Robot Dreams’, set construction in ‘El 47’, and intimate scene direction with child actors in ‘Creatura’.
Directors, screenwriters, visual effects supervisors, editors and cinematographers explain their work to students before cinema visits. Consequently, they invite young audiences to watch scenes with fresh perspectives. The film catalogue includes seven titles addressing themes like historical memory, grief, relationships, migration, female desire and neighbourhood activism.
Educational Impact and Growing Participation
Each screening comes with teaching materials for classroom discussion before and after cinema visits. Moreover, following projections, students participate in image association activities within the cinema itself. These dynamic sessions facilitate dialogue about the films’ thematic content.
One participant from Institut Can Periquet explained how the programme enabled classmates to share diverse viewpoints. “I discovered my classmates’ perspectives and noticed things I’d missed during the film,” the student detailed. Meanwhile, another student appreciated hearing different interpretations they hadn’t considered independently.
The project’s growth demonstrates its successful reception. During the 2024-2025 academic year, 19 sessions reached 2,644 young participants. Remarkably, within just eighteen months, the programme has engaged 4,672 teenagers through 38 sessions across Catalan territory.
Demand for the 2025-2026 programme already exceeds expectations according to Gaudí Cycle organisers. Statistics confirm Catalan cinema’s potential for stimulating social and cultural dialogue in classrooms. Organisers hope the initiative might ignite passion for film industry careers among some participants.
Regardless of vocational outcomes, the Gaudí Cycle educational project considers itself successful if one in ten young people revisits their local cinema or watches another Catalan film this year. This cultural initiative represents part of Barcelona’s broader commitment to making arts accessible to diverse audiences. The programme’s expansion reflects Catalonia’s thriving cultural scene, which contributes significantly to the region’s economic vitality alongside broader economic growth.
