A newly discovered 1922 home video has reopened a long-standing debate about the true image of iconic Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. The three-second clip, filmed during a wedding in central Barcelona, potentially shows Gaudí, prompting discussion among experts.

Art historian Beli Artigas received the previously unreleased film from descendants of the Costa-Artigas family. The family consistently recounted that the architect attended their wedding, held on 17 June 1922, at the Església de la Concepció in Barcelona. The brief footage features a man with a white beard, dark suit, and a boater hat, who quickly crosses the frame. Artigas, exercising caution, framed her discovery as a question, stating, "I launch the great Gaudin challenge. Is the man in the image Gaudí or not?"

Artigas has shared the images on her blog, emphasising that this is a hypothesis rather than a definitive claim. Her objective is to initiate a new line of investigation. This research aims to compare the material with existing documents, photographs, or testimonies. Such verification could either confirm or dismiss Gaudí's presence at the matrimonial ceremony. The historical context of the video is also noteworthy.

Historical Connections and Expert Debate

The relationship between Gaudí and the Costa-Artigas family appears more than anecdotal. For decades, Gaudí has received attribution for designing the gardens of Can Artigas in La Pobla de Lillet. This connection strengthens the possibility of a closer personal link between the architect and the family. However, this link alone does not validate the identity of the man in the film. The debate quickly spread across social media platforms and specialised architectural circles.

Jan X.C., who manages the Efemèrides d’Arquitectura account, publicly argued that the man could indeed be Gaudí. His analysis involved comparing facial features, such as the nose, and the silhouette of the shoulders with known photographs of the architect. This comparison led him to an affirmative conclusion regarding the man's identity. Meanwhile, Galdric Santana, Director of the Gaudí Chair, expressed more prudence.

Calls for Rigorous Scientific Study

Santana, consulted by Agencia EFE, acknowledged the video's interest. However, he warned that any definitive identification requires rigorous scientific study. He explained that this type of analysis could extend for months or even over a year before yielding conclusive results. The Església de la Concepció, where the wedding took place, is a prominent historical church located in Barcelona's Eixample district, a bustling area home to approximately 260,000 residents. Its central location makes it a plausible venue for an event attended by significant public figures.

This is not the first instance where images have been mistakenly attributed to the architect. In 2017, a supposed video of Gaudí at a wedding in Montserrat was ultimately dismissed following detailed analysis. A similar situation occurred in 2016 with a photograph taken at the Universitat de Barcelona. Measurements proved that the man depicted was too tall to be Gaudí. The difficulty in identifying the architect is not accidental.

Challenges in Verifying Gaudí's Image

Unlike many of his contemporaries, few verified moving images of Gaudí exist. His public iconography relies almost exclusively on static photographs. This scarcity makes any new material potentially valuable, but also susceptible to errors and misinformation. The historical context further complicates matters. Domestic film recordings from the early 20th century were rare, often of low quality, and lacked precise documentary intent. Frequently, individuals appearing in these films were not identified at the time, making any subsequent recognition attempts much harder.

The identity of the man in the video remains an open question. He quickly crosses the scene, glances briefly, and then disappears. He could be Antoni Gaudí, or simply someone who bears a strong resemblance. This discovery highlights that even the most thoroughly studied historical figures can still retain areas of mystery, prompting ongoing fascination and rigorous investigation.
