The Barcelona City Council has approved a €264,000 project to create a new aquatic play area in Parc del Mil·lenni, designed specifically to serve as both recreational space and climate refuge during hot summer months.
Gavà Water Playground Features Sustainable Design
The 300-square-metre facility will feature water games at both ground level and elevated positions, providing diverse play experiences for children. Furthermore, the installation will operate using a closed-circuit water recycling system, ensuring responsible water usage throughout the summer season. Mayor Gemma Badia emphasised the project’s dual purpose of providing recreational value while maintaining environmental responsibility.
Accessibility and inclusion form central design principles for the new facility. The surfaces will feature cushioned, non-slip materials specifically chosen to allow children to play comfortably barefoot. This approach aligns with broader municipal efforts to create public spaces that cater to all residents’ needs, similar to recent urban regeneration projects across the Barcelona metropolitan area.
The water playground forms part of a comprehensive €750,000 investment programme upgrading Gavà’s public spaces. This broader initiative includes renovating three additional children’s play areas in the urban centre at Plaza de la Església, Plaza Catalunya and Torre Lluc, representing a further €486,000 investment.
Community Engagement Shapes Future Developments
Municipal planning extends beyond immediate improvements, with a new beachfront play area scheduled for development near the Vela monument in Gavà Mar. Interestingly, this space will be designed in direct collaboration with the Gavà Children’s Council, highlighting the administration’s commitment to youth participation and civic education.
These comprehensive playground upgrades, including renovated equipment, improved surfaces and shaded areas, should become operational by the third quarter of 2026. The municipal plan demonstrates thoughtful consideration for multiple age groups, expanding outdoor fitness facilities with six new training areas for teenagers and older residents, supplementing six existing installations.
Additionally, the council will distribute 15 stationary pedal exercise stations across various city parks. These new facilities will enable users to perform varied mobility, coordination and stretching exercises using equipment such as ellipticals, rowing machines, skateboards and bars. According to official documentation, the ultimate objective remains clear: promoting physical activity and wellbeing throughout Gavà’s public spaces.

Consequently, this project establishes new standards for municipal investment in recreational infrastructure that serves both immediate enjoyment and long-term community resilience.
