Gavà, a municipality in the Baix Llobregat region, has become the first town with its own local police force to integrate its video surveillance system with the Mossos d’Esquadra’s Lectio automatic license plate reader system. This significant collaboration aims to enhance security coordination and crime prevention across Catalonia.

Enhanced Security Coordination

The Gavà City Council announced this week that it will provide data from 25 existing cameras to the Generalitat de Catalunya police. An additional 34 cameras will join the system later this year. This integration seeks to improve the prevention, detection, and investigation of infractions.

Núria Parlon, the Consellera of Interior and Public Security for the Generalitat de Catalunya, described the agreement as “very relevant.” She stated, “We will have an increasingly effective videoprotection system, both in municipalities without local police and in those that have one.” Gavà’s Mayor, Gemma Badia, also remarked that this agreement makes her city “pioneering and a reference in security.” Badia emphasised, “Security is worked on and guaranteed with rigour, responsibility, and coordination, not with exaggerations.”

Broader Regional Impact

Approximately 70 other municipalities across Catalonia, which do not have their own local police forces, already utilised the Lectio system. Gavà’s participation marks a new phase, extending this advanced security technology to towns with established local police departments. This development is crucial for residents and visitors in the Barcelona metropolitan area, as it strengthens the regional security network.

Future System Developments

The expansion of the Lectio videoprotection system in Gavà will also introduce a new management platform. Furthermore, authorities plan to connect cameras from Mossos d’Esquadra vehicles to the system, creating a more comprehensive and interconnected security network.
