The project, located in the Pla de Ponent area’s Ca n’Horta zone, represents one of the most significant recreational investments in recent Baix Llobregat history.
This Thursday’s council meeting will see the approval of the viability report, confirming both financial feasibility and the detailed specifications for the new complex. Furthermore, the session will formalise the municipal contribution of €1.5 million toward construction costs.
Gavà outdoor pool complex features multiple facilities
The ambitious development will include three distinct swimming areas: an Olympic-sized sports pool measuring 25×12.5 metres, a recreational pool with graduated depth, and a dedicated children’s pool. Surrounding these aquatic facilities will be extensive sunbathing and relaxation areas.
Additionally, the complex will incorporate modern fitness amenities that reflect growing demand for multipurpose recreational spaces. The architectural design features an L-shaped building with facades facing both the C-245 road and Calamot street, creating an integrated community hub.
The western section will house changing facilities serving all activities, while the southern wing will contain dedicated fitness studios and spaces for organised classes. Above this module, four outdoor padel courts will provide additional sporting options for residents.
This development follows similar community infrastructure improvements across the Barcelona metropolitan area, demonstrating a regional commitment to enhancing public recreational facilities.
Mayor Gemma Badia has confirmed that the remaining €2.5 million will be provided by a private operator who will secure the management concession. This public-private partnership model has become increasingly common for major municipal projects throughout Catalonia.
However, the project has faced significant opposition from local community groups and environmental organisations. Critics argue that construction would damage the historical surroundings of the 17th-century Ca n’Horta farmhouse, highlighting ongoing tensions between development and heritage preservation.
The controversy reflects broader debates about urban expansion in the Barcelona region, where rapid population growth continues to drive infrastructure demands. Despite these challenges, council officials remain committed to delivering the Gavà outdoor pool facility as planned.
According to municipal documentation, the project derives from the winning proposal in an earlier ideas competition, ensuring the design meets both functional requirements and community expectations. Construction is expected to commence following final approvals.
