Preliminary investigations point to water accumulation as the decisive factor. Óscar Puente, the Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, stated that heavy rains destabilised the slope supporting the wall. Consequently, the structure slid downwards, striking the train with immense force.
“The collapse of a wall occurs as a consequence of the rains, which generate a slip in the slope that this wall contains. That wall falls onto the train cabin,” Puente explained regarding the crash mechanics.
Sílvia Paneque, the Minister of Territory for the Generalitat, confirmed the timing was critical. The landslide coincided perfectly with the train’s passage, causing the immediate derailment of the first carriage. Therefore, this front section bore the brunt of the impact, trapping the young driver and several passengers.

Local residents were the first to assist the victims. For example, neighbours like Ernestina opened their homes to the injured, creating improvised field hospitals within minutes. She described giving water and coffee to frightened passengers while they waited for professional medical teams.

“There is a collapse of a retaining wall that is leaning on the train. When the train is removed we don’t know if the wall will fall or if it will further stabilise the track,” the official noted.
