Gelida Train Accident: Landslide Caused Collision
The collision happened around 21:00 on Tuesday as the train travelled between Sant Vicenç de Calders and Manresa. A containment wall supporting the AP-7 motorway gave way, sending rubble onto the railway line below just as the train approached.
Sílvia Paneque, the Minister of Territory for the Generalitat, stated that initial investigations point to a sudden landslide. This landslide occurred at the exact moment the train was passing. Consequently, the driver had little time to react to the obstruction. This incident adds to the list of notable train accidents in Spain over recent decades.
Gelida Train Accident Causes Widespread Rail Disruption
Renfe suspended Rodalies services throughout the area on Wednesday to assess infrastructure safety. The bad weather has caused structural issues elsewhere in the network. Therefore, concerns about further landslides have been raised.
Spanish Minister of Transport Óscar Puente highlighted the scale of the weather impact. He noted that another wall had collapsed earlier on Wednesday on the R1 line, likely in Pineda del Mar. Fortunately, that section of the line had already been closed, avoiding further casualties.
Investigation Underway into Gelida Train Accident
A judicial commission led by the duty judge from Vilafranca del Penedès visited the site on Wednesday morning. Their purpose was to authorise the removal of the victim’s body and gather preliminary evidence. The Mossos d’Esquadra have taken charge of the inquiry.
Specialist officers from the Central Airport and Public Transport Area are examining the scene. They aim to determine exactly why the infrastructure failed. Their findings will clarify whether maintenance issues or solely the extreme weather conditions caused the tragedy. Meanwhile, the event has brought renewed attention to various infrastructure safety studies in Catalonia. These studies highlight the risks associated with aging transport networks.
Work to clear the tracks is progressing. However, normal service remains disrupted while safety checks continue.
