Patients in Badalona and surrounding areas will benefit from reduced waiting lists and higher precision surgery. The Germans Trias Hospital operating rooms have undergone a major expansion. This week, the hospital opened a new high-tech surgical block.
The €29.6 million project adds six state-of-the-art suites. Consequently, the total number of theatres at the centre now reaches 28. Officials inaugurated the space on Friday. They highlighted that construction finished in just two years. This timeline is significantly faster than the typical five-to-seven-year period for such complex medical infrastructure.

Advanced robotics and imaging in Germans Trias Hospital operating rooms
The upgrade focuses heavily on automation and real-time imaging. Therefore, patient outcomes should improve. Three of the new rooms form a dedicated robotics cluster. This setup allows surgeons to perform minimally invasive procedures with greater precision. Specialities include gynaecology and general surgery.
The remaining three suites feature integrated radiodiagnostic technology. These rooms are equipped with intraoperative CT scans and CBCT systems. As a result, medical teams can obtain high-resolution images without moving the patient. This capability is particularly vital for increasing safety. It benefits neurosurgery, maxillofacial work, and trauma operations.
Reducing waiting times with new Germans Trias Hospital operating rooms
Hospital manager Josep Maria Mòdol explained that the expansion addresses a growing population’s needs. By increasing the hospital’s problem-solving capacity, the new facilities aim to cut waiting lists. They also improve coordination between different medical teams. The centre serves a wide catchment area. This includes Barcelonès Nord, the Maresme, and municipalities in the Vallès and Girona regions. Such upgrades are vital amidst system-wide pressures, such as the ongoing doctors’ strike in Barcelona.
During the inauguration, Catalan President Salvador Illa noted the investment places the hospital at the forefront of European medical technology. As detailed by the Generalitat de Catalunya, the project also includes a new digestive and respiratory endoscopy unit. This initiative is one of several large-scale regional projects overseen by Catalan President Salvador Illa.
Local leaders emphasised the necessity of continued support for the area’s health infrastructure. Badalona Mayor Xavier Garcia Albiol stated that while the new facilities serve the wider region, the local population requires sustained investment. This guarantees system excellence as demand increases. This project is a key example of major public infrastructure investment intended to meet residents’ needs.
