Controversial zigzag tram works have started at Barcelona’s Glòries entrance this Monday. The city council confirmed the beginning of this 32.54 million euro redevelopment project. This second phase focuses on the seaside section of Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes. Moreover, it aims to reorganise transport between Plaça de les Glòries and Rambla del Poblenou.

Transport Transformation Underway
These works form part of Glòries’ comprehensive transformation plan. Consequently, they will completely pacify the area above the tunnel network. The project specifically targets the Besòs side of this major plaza.
Additionally, it seeks to optimise multiple transport modes. These include trams, pedestrians, buses, cycle lanes and private vehicles. First deputy mayor Laia Bonet emphasised pedestrian priority. She stated the project focuses on walking routes and public transport efficiency.
The council plans to increase pedestrian crossings significantly. Furthermore, it will create direct walking connections between different spaces. This approach addresses the complex Gran Via, Diagonal and Badajoz street intersection. You can read more about Barcelona’s transport developments on the Barcelona City Council website.
Controversial Tram Route Changes
The most debated element involves the tram’s new zigzag path. This requires double sharp turns for TramBesòs vehicles travelling along Gran Via. The modified route will divert trams via Ciutat de Granada street.
Therefore, it will connect with existing Diagonal tracks. This change creates a single tram connection point between Glòries and Diagonal. Meanwhile, it avoids two track crossings with Badajoz street.
The municipality defends this as a pedestrian improvement. It enables direct central plaza access from both Gran Via and Diagonal. Current configurations force less direct walking routes. Discover how this fits with other Barcelona transport projects on our site.
Cycle connectivity also receives major upgrades. The project includes a new bidirectional bike lane along Badajoz-Independència axis. This provides safer, continuous cycling routes throughout the area. The new lane will link with existing unidirectional Independència bike path. Consequently, it connects Meridiana and Diagonal cycling infrastructure.
Barcelona’s Glòries transformation continues with these controversial tram works. The zigzag route aims to streamline transport while prioritising pedestrians. However, the unusual configuration has sparked considerable public debate. These changes will significantly alter how residents navigate this key city intersection.
