Barcelona’s historic centre has welcomed a new Gothic Quarter farmers market. Starting Tuesday, 17 February, the Mercat de Pagès will take over Plaça de la Mercè every Tuesday afternoon. This initiative brings local producers directly to residents and visitors in the Gothic Quarter.
The market operates weekly from 16:30 to 19:30. Moreover, organisers designed it to champion sustainable consumption. Consequently, it provides easy access to high-quality, seasonal goods in the heart of Ciutat Vella.

Gothic Quarter Farmers Market: Local Produce and Artisanal Goods
Promoted by the Xarxa de Consum Solidari (Solidarity Consumption Network), the initiative focuses on shortening the supply chain between the field and the table. Additionally, the stalls feature a variety of agroecological products. Consequently, shoppers can find essential items grown or crafted within the region.
Among the vendors confirmed for the new Plaça de la Mercè market are:
- El Petit Bané: An agroecological market garden offering fresh vegetables.
- Can Pedret: Producers of artisanal charcuterie and sausages.
- La Selvatana: Suppliers of dairy products.
- La Vall de la Casella: Specialists in organic citrus and seasonal fruit.
Beyond fresh fruit and vegetables, the market offers a wide range of pantry staples. These include artisanal cheeses, bread, eggs, olive oil, honey, preserves, wines, and craft beers. Additionally, shoppers can find natural cosmetics and fair-trade products.
More Than Just a Market
Organisers view these markets as a vital opportunity. Moreover, they aim to defend small-scale agriculture while strengthening the local economy. To foster a sense of community, the Plaça de la Mercè market will also host free activities. These include cooking workshops for children, product tastings, and educational sessions on food production.
With this latest opening, Barcelona now boasts 11 farmers’ markets distributed across various neighbourhoods. Each has its own distinct character. Meanwhile, the new Gothic Quarter farmers market operates on Tuesdays. However, most others in the network-such as those in Sant Andreu, Sants-Montjuïc, and Eixample-take place on weekends or bi-weekly schedules.
