After 25 years serving Catalan cuisine just steps from Plaça de Catalunya, the much-loved restaurant Lluís de les Moles closed its doors in September 2024. Now, a year later, the space is being reborn as a Vietnamese restaurant named 999 Thāng Long.

The new venture is led by Jessie and Ann, alongside their son Son, who explained that the name means ‘The Rise of the Dragon’. The restaurant is expected to open this September, offering a sharp break from its predecessor’s market-driven, Mediterranean menus.

Lluís de les Moles was a well-regarded institution under chef Lluís Piera, whose career spanned renowned kitchens such as Via Veneto and Botafumeiro. The closure surprised many in Barcelona’s food scene, as the restaurant had long been seen as an affordable but high-quality fixture in the Gothic Quarter.

The transformation illustrates the ongoing shifts in the city’s historic centre, where traditional establishments have steadily given way to more diverse culinary offers. BarnaCentre, the local trade association representing around 1,000 businesses, notes that Carrer de les Moles itself carries deep history, once home to stonecutters and a departure point for mule-drawn carts bound for Zaragoza.

Now, the street prepares to welcome a new chapter, with Vietnamese flavours taking over a space once synonymous with Catalan dining.
