A significant Gran Via L’Hospitalet gas leak from a vehicle refuelling at a petrol station forced the closure of the Gran Via in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat on Wednesday afternoon. Consequently, traffic heading towards Barcelona faced major disruption.

The incident occurred around 14:00 near the IKEA shopping centre. Therefore, a road closure lasted approximately one hour while emergency services secured the area.

Gran Via L’Hospitalet Gas Leak at Service Station

The alarm was raised when a black Toyota Land Cruiser with Ukrainian registration plates suffered a fuel leak while refuelling at an LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) pump at a Repsol station. According to witnesses, smoke was seen coming from the vehicle, prompting an immediate alert.

Firefighters from the Bombers de la Generalitat confirmed that the vehicle was fitted with an LPG tank with a capacity of 35 to 50 litres. Meanwhile, three fire crews were dispatched to the scene at 13:57 to manage the situation. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and no active gas risk to the wider atmosphere was detected.

Traffic Diversions and Delays

To ensure public safety, the Guardia Urbana de L’Hospitalet cordoned off the service station and closed the main lanes of the Gran Via in the direction of Barcelona. Police officers diverted general traffic through Calle Miguel Hernández, allowing only regular bus lines to continue along the main avenue.

The closure caused congestion on the lateral roads. In addition, it affected one of the main entry points to Barcelona from the Baix Llobregat area.

Situation Resolved

Emergency teams monitored the vehicle until the gas tank had completely emptied and the fumes had dissipated. By approximately 15:00, officers verified that the area was safe and authorised the reopening of the Gran Via to normal traffic.

The petrol station was also able to reopen shortly after 15:00. However, the affected vehicle remained immobilised and taped off while awaiting removal.
