The ambitious project targets the section between Castillejos and Padilla streets, addressing years of deterioration caused by nearby construction works at Plaça de les Glòries and the new underground tunnels.
Gran Via Infrastructure Project Details
The municipal initiative will transform approximately 9,000 square metres along a 130-metre stretch of Gran Via. Currently, the area remains in a provisional state with temporary concrete barriers and narrowed pavements. Consequently, the renovation will establish six-metre-wide pavements with new tree planting on each side, alongside six-metre-wide carriageways.
Furthermore, traffic patterns will be reorganised to improve flow and safety. The mountain side will feature a single lane dedicated to buses and taxis, while the sea side will accommodate private vehicles. This reconfiguration aims to balance transportation needs with pedestrian priorities.
The announcement came during Monday’s neighbourhood council meeting presided over by Deputy Mayor Jordi Valls. Interestingly, the infrastructure plans generated less controversy than ongoing security concerns raised by local residents.
Community Concerns Beyond Infrastructure
During the meeting, resident Mireia Roca presented a manifesto on behalf of several community organisations. She highlighted persistent security issues including drug dealing, public drunkenness, frequent fights and daytime drug trafficking operations.
Additionally, residents expressed frustration about the poor condition of the roadway between Marina and Passeig de Sant Joan. They noted that painted bicycle lanes on pavements continue to encourage cyclists to use pedestrian spaces, while electric scooters threaten pedestrian safety throughout the area.
These security concerns reflect broader patterns across Barcelona’s neighbourhoods. Similar issues have prompted significant community protests demanding improved public safety measures in other districts.
The Gran Via infrastructure transformation represents a crucial step in Barcelona’s ongoing urban renewal efforts. However, the community’s response demonstrates that physical improvements must be accompanied by comprehensive security strategies to fully address resident concerns.
