The Catalan Government has authorised a direct subsidy of €10.3 million for the Consortium for Waste Management of Vallès Oriental. This funding will significantly improve the organic waste treatment plant located in Granollers, Barcelona province.

The subsidy amplifies a previous contribution from the Waste Agency of Catalonia (ARC) for the first phase of the plant's expansion and improvement project. This initial phase represents a total investment of €60.3 million from the ARC, supplemented by €2.5 million from the Consortium for Waste Management of Vallès Oriental.

Enhancing Regional Waste Management

These upgrades will position the Granollers plant as a crucial infrastructure for organic waste management in Catalonia. It will primarily serve the Vallès Oriental and Maresme regions, both located in Barcelona province. The plant also holds the potential to support other areas as needed.

Officials expect the increased capacity and enhanced composting processes to improve and boost the quantities of compost obtained. This development is part of broader efforts to modernise waste treatment facilities across the region. The Executive Council approved the subsidy following its meeting on Tuesday, 21st April.

Future Impact on Compost Production

The improvements aim to handle a greater volume of organic waste efficiently. Consequently, the plant will produce higher quality and larger quantities of compost. This initiative underscores the Catalan Government's commitment to sustainable waste management and environmental protection for its residents.
