Greenpeace Arctic Sunrise has docked in Barcelona this weekend to demand urgent climate action at the critical COP30 summit in Brazil.

The iconic icebreaker vessel arrived at Moll d’Espanya (Plaça de l’Odissea) as part of a global campaign pushing for stronger political leadership on environmental protection.

The ship will remain open to the public throughout Saturday and Sunday, offering visitors access between 10:00-13:00 and 16:00-20:00 hours.

This represents a rare opportunity for Barcelona residents to explore one of Greenpeace’s most famous vessels, which the organization purchased in 1995 after its previous life as a seal-hunting ship.

Greenpeace Arctic Sunrise Highlights Climate Emergency

Greenpeace describes the current moment as “critical” for climate action, particularly after global temperatures surpassed the 1.5°C limit set by the Paris Agreement in 2024. Consequently, the organization views COP30 in Belém, Brazil as a crucial opportunity to address the escalating ecological crisis before it becomes irreversible.

“The Arctic Sunrise is a symbol, and these days it visits Barcelona to remind us that climate action is more necessary than ever,” stated Carolina Pérez, Greenpeace’s responsible in Catalonia. “All that’s needed is political will and international cooperation to prioritize protecting life over particular economic interests.”

Furthermore, the organization specifically targeted Barcelona’s port during this visit, highlighting its role as a logistical hub for soybean trade contributing to deforestation and liquefied gas shipments. This strategic positioning aims to draw attention to local contributions to global environmental challenges.

The Greenpeace Arctic Sunrise visit coincides with growing environmental concerns across Spain. The organization cited Catalonia’s recent drought (2022-2024), Valencia’s 2024 DANA floods, and this summer’s record-breaking wildfire damage as evidence of climate change’s immediate impact on the Iberian Peninsula.
