Barcelona nurses protest against growing healthcare privatisation and staff shortages that they say compromise patient safety.
Approximately 100 nurses and nursing assistants gathered outside the Catalan Health Institute (ICS) on Sunday morning, then marched to Parliament to demand action on what they describe as an escalating crisis in the public health system.
The demonstration highlighted concerns about deteriorating working conditions and the gradual privatisation of healthcare services across Catalonia.

Spokesperson Inés Montoya, a nurse at Vall d’Hebron Hospital, explained to journalists how staffing cuts directly affect medical services. “Having fewer staff leads to malpractice because we cannot provide the proper level of care,” she stated. Additionally, she emphasised that overworked healthcare professionals face extreme stress, which consequently impacts treatment quality.
The protest specifically targeted what participants called the “creeping privatisation” of CUAP and ASSIR services within primary care centres. Montoya warned that public sector workers placed in privately managed facilities risk losing employment rights and facing further staffing reductions. Meanwhile, the ageing population requires more complex care for multiple conditions, creating additional pressure on an already strained system.
According to recent political developments, healthcare funding has become a central issue in budget negotiations. However, protesters argue that current measures don’t adequately address the fundamental problems facing frontline medical staff.
Payment disputes also featured prominently in the demonstration. Nursing assistants revealed they’re owed a supplement dating back to 2003, while nurses await payments approved in 2024. These financial concerns compound the existing challenges within Barcelona’s cost of living crisis, making it increasingly difficult to retain healthcare professionals in the city.
