Volunteers from the international campaigning organisation Avaaz have unveiled a massive tarp featuring the portrait of Hind Rajab on Somorrostro beach in Barcelona. This 1,000-square-metre Hind Rajab portrait serves as a poignant tribute to the six-year-old Palestinian girl killed in Gaza two years ago. That debate has been building for months — we covered it in Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni’s planned visit to Palestine.
Thursday’s installation was designed not only as a commemoration but as a demand for international action. Among those gathering on the sand were Spain’s Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, and Hind’s mother, who travelled to Barcelona to deliver an emotional address. That debate has been building for months — we covered it in recent antisemitic vandalism of Jewish graves in Barcelona.

Hind Rajab Portrait: A Call to Conscience
Speaking to the crowd, Hind’s mother emphasised that the portrait was more than a temporary image on the sand. She described it as an attempt to “draw a conscience, draw a stance, draw a name that neither the sea nor time will be able to erase.” That debate has been building for months — we covered it in heightened police focus in Catalonia on sites linked to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
“Her name has become a call. Her image has become a witness. Her innocence has become the denunciation of a world that remains silent.”Hind’s mother
Hind Rajab was killed alongside her family by Israeli army fire while attempting to flee Gaza city. Her desperate phone call for help sparked global outrage. During the call, she remained trapped in a car with her deceased relatives.

The event also highlighted the cultural impact of Hind’s story. Her story has been documented in the film The Voice of Hind. Directed by Kaouther Ben Hania, the documentary has been nominated for an Oscar for Best International Feature Film.
Saja Kilani, the film’s lead actress, attended the Barcelona event. She noted that Hind’s story had transcended borders and languages. “Barcelona, that you have chosen to come and be here is proof that it is necessary to speak her language,” Kilani said. “It is not necessary to look like her, it is not necessary to share her passport to be on the side of humanity.”
Patricia López, a representative for Avaaz, framed the action as an act of “vindication” rather than simple remembrance. She urged the international community to finally respond to the pleas of Palestinian children. López noted that the world failed to answer Hind’s call when it mattered most.
“Unlike what happened with Hind, who called and we did not know how to respond to her call for help, what we want now is for the international community to finally act,” López stated. She added that organisers sought to “rekindle the conversation about Gaza” while violence continues in the region. Therefore, this powerful Hind Rajab portrait on Barcelona beach serves as a lasting visual demand for justice.
