A landmark cinema on one of Barcelona’s most famous avenues, which has been dark for over twenty years, will be reborn this spring as a major new venue for corporate and cultural events. The former Cine Diagonal will reopen its doors as ‘Espai Diagonal’, adding a versatile, high-capacity space to the city’s thriving events sector.

Wevenue, a Madrid-based company specialising in event space management, is driving the project. According to a report by El Periódico, the firm will invest approximately three million euros to revitalise the historic site. This launch comes as Barcelona continues to cement its reputation as a leading international destination for congresses, fairs, and business gatherings.

A Historic Venue Reimagined

Espai Diagonal is situated at number 458 on the iconic Avinguda Diagonal, near the prestigious intersection with Passeig de Gràcia. Its prime location, on the border between the Eixample and Gràcia districts, places it at the heart of the city’s commercial and cultural life, an area recently transformed by significant investment and luxury expansion.

The new venue will offer 2,000 square metres of adaptable space across two floors, accommodating up to 500 attendees. A standout feature is its impressive 9.5-metre free ceiling height. This, combined with a blend of original and contemporary architecture, makes it suitable for a wide array of functions. Organisers state that the design preserves historic elements, such as the traditional Catalan vault ceiling, while incorporating modern materials.

The project’s website indicates this blend of old and new will allow the space to adapt for complex technical productions, automotive presentations, or brand activations, alongside cocktails, banquets, and cabaret or theatre shows. The layout will include several distinct areas mirroring its theatrical past, including stalls, a gallery, private boxes, an upper circle, and dressing rooms.

From Blockbusters to Business Events

The building holds a significant place in the city’s cultural memory. The Cine Diagonal first opened in February 1961. Managed by the renowned Grupo Balañá, it quickly became one of Barcelona’s most popular commercial cinemas. With a capacity for 999 spectators, it served as a go-to venue for major blockbuster premieres for decades, until it screened its final film in 2003.

In the 21 years since, the space has had other lives. It served first as a large lighting store, then as a home decoration shop, which closed in 2023. This latest transformation into an event hall marks its most significant reinvention.

The revival of the Cine Diagonal as Espai Diagonal represents more than just a new venue opening; it marks a new chapter for a historic building. It aligns with a broader city-wide effort to preserve architectural heritage while adapting it for contemporary needs. This trend is also evident in projects like the cultural relaunch of Casa SEAT, the ongoing restoration of Clot Park’s historic façades, and the ambitious redevelopment of the former La Model prison. With its opening this spring, Espai Diagonal is poised to become a key player in Barcelona’s dynamic and ever-growing events landscape.
