Historic La Estrella bakery has claimed the prestigious 2025 Ramblista d’Honor award after its remarkable revival by two young entrepreneurs saved the 200-year-old establishment from closure. The iconic bakery, founded in 1825, was rescued from potential extinction when Anna Campos and Judit Servent, both 25, took over the business following the previous owner’s retirement. Their intervention prevented another historic local shop from disappearing from Barcelona’s changing commercial landscape.

Furthermore, the timing couldn’t be more significant as the bakery marks its 200th anniversary this year. The award ceremony took place at Barcelona’s Saló de Cent, where Mayor Jaume Collboni presented the honour to the new proprietors. Consequently, this recognition highlights the importance of preserving traditional businesses amid increasing commercial pressure from 24-hour supermarkets and souvenir shops.

Meanwhile, the jury specifically praised the “rescue” mission undertaken by Campos and Servent, who have brought renewed energy to the long-established business. “We haven’t even completed a year yet, and this prize gives us great momentum to continue with this project,” expressed Campos during her acceptance speech. Additionally, Mayor Collboni thanked the pair for their “defence of traditions” through gastronomy, which he described as forming part of Barcelona’s identity.

The historic La Estrella bakery now joins an exclusive list of Ramblista d’Honor recipients. Moreover, this year’s awards also recognised Eduard Soley, a fruit stall operator from La Boqueria market with fifty years of service, and actor Joan Pera, who received the Creu de Sant Jordi in 2015. Therefore, the ceremony celebrated diverse contributions to Barcelona’s cultural and commercial life.
Ultimately, the historic La Estrella bakery’s recognition comes at a crucial time for La Rambla, which is undergoing significant transformation works. However, as Mayor Collboni noted, while the famous boulevard “has changed and will change,” it will always “maintain its soul.” The preservation of establishments like La Estrella ensures that Barcelona’s commercial heritage remains intact for future generations.
