A classroom fire at Can Vilumara Institute in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat forced the evacuation of about 800 students on Tuesday, 2 June. The school is in the Barcelona metropolitan area, just west of the city.
Seven units from the Generalitat Fire Service went to the school to deal with the blaze. The building was evacuated so students and staff could leave safely while crews worked at the scene.
Firefighters brought the incident under control and prevented it from spreading further through the institute. The evacuation was carried out as a precaution, with safety the main priority for everyone inside the building.
Authorities will now investigate what caused the fire and assess the damage to the classroom and any other affected areas. The school will decide when pupils can return once checks and any repair work are complete.
L'Hospitalet de Llobregat is one of Barcelona's largest neighbouring cities, and incidents like this can affect a large number of families quickly. For more local coverage, see our Community and Sport pages.
