Hundreds of pro-Palestine protesters marched through Barcelona on Friday evening, the fourth major demonstration since Israel’s military intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla earlier this week. The march kicked off at 6:45pm from Plaça Urquinaona, heading down Via Laietana to Plaça de la Carbonera, where around 150 people spent their first night camping in tents.

Groups like Comunitat Palestina de Catalunya, Prou Complicitat amb Israel, Global Movement to Gaza and Global Sumud Flotilla organised the protest. Marchers chanted “Free free Palestine” and “Viva viva Palestina” as they made their way through the city centre. At the front, a vehicle with loudspeakers led a column from Via Laietana carrying banners, Palestinian flags with hands symbolising blood stains, and slogans against what they call Israel’s occupation.

This latest march follows Thursday’s massive gathering at Plaça de la Carbonera, which brought together around 15,000 people from different starting points across the city. During that protest, a large group of demonstrators, some wearing masks, circled the roundabout and moved from Drassanes towards the Ronda Litoral, shouting “Palestina Libertad”. Another Saturday demonstration is already scheduled to start at noon from Jardinets de Gràcia, finishing at Arc de Triomf.

Meanwhile, Friday also saw students march from Plaça Universitat to Plaça de la Carbonera around 1pm. The protest camp at the square has grown to around 150 people during the first night and organisers plan to keep it running until at least 15 October, when a general strike is called.
