Iberia has announced a temporary price cap on its Barcelona-Madrid “Air Shuttle” service. The airline is limiting tourist class fares to €99 per leg. This decision responds directly to the ongoing railway crisis in Catalonia. Consequently, severe high-speed train service disruptions have forced thousands of passengers to seek alternative transport.
Iberia Barcelona-Madrid price cap: response to soaring demand
Following weeks of disruptions on the high-speed railway corridor between Madrid and Barcelona, air traffic has seen a significant surge in demand. Therefore, as travellers shifted from trains to planes, airline ticket prices rose sharply. To mitigate the financial impact on passengers, Iberia has intervened by setting a maximum price of €99 for one-way tickets on the route. This measure specifically targets the “Ponte Aéreo” (Air Shuttle) service and will remain in effect until Thursday, 19 February.

Moreover, the airline is a dominant player at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport. It operates up to 14 daily flights in each direction between the two capitals. These frequencies cover all time slots from 06:45 to 21:35, ensuring consistent availability for affected travellers.
Scope of the Iberia Barcelona-Madrid price cap
The price limitation applies strictly to standard tourist class tickets. However, it does not extend to the “Puente Aéreo Flexible” or “Puente Aéreo Confort” fares. These options are designed for frequent flyers requiring greater flexibility, premium comfort, and additional services.
This is not the first time the airline has adjusted its operations in response to rail infrastructure failures. For instance, Iberia recently capped prices and reinforced its connections to Málaga and Seville. This followed the suspension of rail links caused by an accident at Adamuz.
Rail sector under pressure
The aviation sector’s move highlights the severity of the current rail crisis. Systematic delays on high-speed rail—often reaching an hour—have plagued high-speed services recently.
On Monday, Adif, the administrator of railway infrastructure, requested that high-speed operators (Renfe, Iryo, and Ouigo) cancel the last trains of each day. This drastic measure intends to facilitate urgent nighttime maintenance work. Ultimately, this work is required to restore reliability to the network.
