Ibiza Town Council has requested urgent action from the Spanish government to declare the island a civil emergency zone following severe flooding from a cold drop weather system. The municipality estimates total damage at nearly €15 million, affecting both public infrastructure and private businesses. According to officials, the council unanimously approved the formal request for emergency declaration on 5th October.

Municipal Infrastructure Damage

Two weeks after the initial storm, municipal authorities have assessed damage to public buildings and facilities at approximately €5 million. This figure includes necessary repairs to locations including the Cetis sports centre, the Equality Centre and municipal parks. Additional damage has been documented across public roads, landscaped areas, lighting systems, traffic signals and Figueretas promenade.

The council has identified structural issues affecting non-municipal roads including the Sant Antoni highway and Sant Josep avenue. Assessments indicate these routes lack adequate drainage systems to efficiently manage water runoff. Meanwhile, storm damage to shops, hotels and restaurants exceeds €9 million according to preliminary evaluations.

Emergency Response Demands

Council officials are demanding the Spanish government accelerate emergency declaration procedures and activate special recovery measures. Mayor Rafa Triguero emphasised residents require swift, effective responses as each day without emergency status creates additional difficulties for families, businesses and public services. The mayor insisted the government must act with appropriate urgency given the situation’s severity. The municipality awaits specific details from Madrid regarding anticipated aid packages and quantification of support for Ibiza. This situation follows broader regional concerns about infrastructure funding, as highlighted in our coverage of housing fund demands.
