Catalan President Salvador Illa criticised national opposition leaders Alberto Núñez Feijóo of the People's Party (PP) and Santiago Abascal of Vox on Friday, 3 May, for their approach to the hantavirus crisis. He accused them of constant confrontation. Illa expressed disappointment with their stance, which he compared to criticisms faced during his time as Spain's Minister of Health during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Illa's Disappointment with Opposition

Speaking in a Cadena Ser interview, Illa, who previously served as Spain's Minister of Health during the COVID-19 pandemic, stated that the opposition's criticisms "unfortunately" reminded him of those he received. He regretted the "noise and confusion" being generated by their actions. Illa called for institutional loyalty and adherence to scientific criteria in managing the public health emergency.

Illa directly criticised Feijóo, saying, "Mr Feijóo, once again, disappoints me. He disappoints me because this situation requires a minimum sense of responsibility, which leads one to act with loyalty and trust the health authorities." He added that Feijóo and Abascal "always do the same, always confront, always confront," providing "a manual on how not to do" opposition, according to Hantavirus disease information. This political friction occurs as health authorities manage a sensitive public health issue.

Scientific Approach to Hantavirus

The hantavirus crisis involves a ship, the MSC Armonia, identified as the infection's source. Authorities decided to anchor this vessel in the Canary Islands. Illa affirmed this decision followed scientific, not political, criteria and common sense. He highlighted the importance of international conventions and human rights in such situations.

Illa explained, "There are international conventions, rights that must be respected, and we must act with humanity. If the Canary Islands and Spain have healthcare capabilities that other countries unfortunately lack, then we must act consistently with this." This decision ensures appropriate medical attention for those affected by the virus. The Generalitat supports these measures.

Ongoing Monitoring and Support

President Illa confirmed his direct contact with Spain's Minister of Health, Mónica García, and Minister of Territorial Policy, Ángel Víctor Torres. The Catalan government is also maintaining contact with Catalan citizens aboard the ship. They are actively "monitoring the situation" to ensure their well-being and provide necessary support. This coordinated effort aims to mitigate risks and assist affected individuals.
