Salvador Illa, the President of the Generalitat de Catalunya, championed Christian humanist values on Monday in Barcelona, advocating for them as a guiding principle in a “turbulent world” marked by escalating conflict. He made these remarks at the launch of ‘Escolta Poblet’, a new podcast from RNE Catalunya-Ràdio 4, held at the Monasterio de Santa Maria de Valldonzella.

President Illa firmly stated that wars are not inevitable, urging a commitment to peace. He also expressed regret over actions that restrict religious freedom, citing Israel’s decision to prevent Palm Sunday Mass at the Holy Sepulchre. Illa remarked, “some governments question and restrict religious freedom”. He emphasised that everyone possesses the right to practise spirituality and faith as they choose. He also highlighted the importance of common social values.

The event in Barcelona’s Monasterio de Santa Maria de Valldonzella brought together several prominent figures. Attendees included Ramon Bassas, the Director General of Religious Affairs, and Joan Canela, Mayor of Vimbodí i Poblet in Tarragona. Esteve Crespo, Director of RTVE Catalunya, also participated.

‘Escolta Poblet’ Podcast Focus

The new ‘Escolta Poblet’ podcast, presented by journalists Sílvia Tarragona and Pep Gregori, comprises eight episodes. It explores monastic life at the Monasterio de Poblet, prompting reflections on faith, religion, and contemporary societal issues. The production incorporates sounds recorded directly at the monastery.

Sílvia Tarragona explained that the podcast encourages listeners to “look inward” and engage in an exercise of intimacy. This approach offers a contrast to a world often characterised by excessive noise and confrontation. Pep Gregori added that the programme uses the experiences of Poblet’s residents to discuss society as a whole.

Sònia Urbano, Director of Ràdio 4, stressed the role of public media in fostering spaces for reflection. She affirmed that the programme places “human richness at the centre” through its rigorous, sensitive, profound, and sincere narrative.

Historical Significance of Poblet

President Illa highlighted the often-underestimated richness of monastic life and the significant heritage of Poblet. He underscored its historical relevance to Catalonia. Notably, former Catalan President Josep Tarradellas bequeathed his personal archive to the monastery, trusting its community’s rigour and character.

Josep Poblet, President of the Fundación Poblet, described the monastery as “the most important monumental complex with a living community in Europe”. He suggested this also makes it the most important globally. He thanked the Generalitat for its support and advocated for Poblet’s continued future relevance.

The Monasterio de Poblet, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a Cistercian monastery located in Vimbodí i Poblet, Tarragona. It holds profound historical and cultural significance for Catalonia. Meanwhile, the Monasterio de Santa Maria de Valldonzella, where the launch took place, is a Cistercian convent situated in Barcelona’s Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district. This Barcelona location provided a fitting urban setting for the discussion on spiritual values.

The launch of ‘Escolta Poblet’ aims to provide a platform for deeper societal reflection, moving beyond daily political discourse. This initiative encourages a broader public engagement with spiritual and humanist principles. It seeks to foster understanding in an increasingly complex world.
