Catalonia is preparing a strategy to shield its economy from US tariffs and boost international trade. President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, announced a 2026–2030 plan aimed at encouraging 2,000 new companies to begin exporting.

Unveiling the programme at the Palau de la Generalitat, Illa stressed that Catalonia’s economic engine depends not only on government action but also on the collective efforts of its society and businesses. As part of the initiative, companies can already access grants of up to €90,000 to support market diversification, exports and growth.

The strategy seeks to soften the blow of US tariffs while enhancing Catalonia’s global presence. By offering financial incentives and guidance, the government hopes to make exporting a viable path for smaller firms as well as established players.

Illa highlighted that internationalisation is essential to ensure long-term resilience. The plan aims to push Catalan enterprises to compete more effectively in global markets, reducing reliance on any single trading partner.
