Catalan president Salvador Illa has extended a hand and promised to “listen to everyone” on housing matters, ahead of the general policy debate in Parliament. “I’m willing to listen to everyone and the different groups with their ideas and proposals. But I won’t do magic or sell miracles,” Illa said this Monday at the event ‘The right to housing: challenges and solutions’, organised by eldiario.es.

“It’s not a problem that will be solved in a year, nor exclusive to Catalunya or Spain. We need time to see results,” the president made clear, placing access to housing as the main focus of inequality and prescribing “build, build and build”. “I commit to following a clear direction on housing, with persistence and resource mobilisation,” Illa stressed. “But none of this magic or grandstanding speeches, only courage and ambition,” insisted the president, who called for collaboration from four levels of government – municipal, regional, state and European.

The president reiterated his willingness to dialogue but also the need for realism, noting that housing is a complex issue requiring time and collective effort to find effective solutions.
