JD Sports opens Europe’s largest store this Saturday in Barcelona’s iconic Portal de l’Àngel shopping district.

The new flagship represents a major retail milestone for the city, occupying a massive 1,500 square metres across two floors in the former Disney store location at number 9.

This development follows extensive renovation works that spanned nearly four years, including significant archaeological discoveries that delayed the project.

Consequently, the transformation required careful preservation of the historic building’s heritage while creating a modern retail space.

JD Sports Creates 110 New Barcelona Jobs

The opening brings substantial economic benefits to the local community. Furthermore, it creates 110 new positions, bringing JD Sports’ total Barcelona workforce to 530 employees.

Teresa Llordés, president of Barna Centre merchants association, celebrated the development as “very good news” that combines commercial value with heritage preservation. She emphasised how this JD Sports location consolidates the area’s position as a key destination for streetwear and urban fashion trends.

According to recent economic reports, Barcelona continues to attract significant retail investment despite broader market challenges. The Portal de l’Àngel location specifically attracts over 10,000 daily pedestrians, making it one of Europe’s busiest shopping streets.

José Carlos González, Associate Director Retail South Europe at JD Sports, explained their detailed planning approach. “From building restoration to space layout, everything is designed for an experience that goes beyond shopping and emotionally connects with visitors,” he stated.

The new JD Sports flagship will feature major brands including Nike, Adidas and New Balance alongside the company’s own labels. Additionally, customers will find urban fashion, accessories, sports equipment and exclusive collaborations in an immersive retail environment.

This strategic European location strengthens Barcelona’s retail landscape while addressing ongoing employment concerns in the city centre. The store opening includes special events, customisation stations and promotional activities throughout the weekend.
