Junts per Catalunya will begin its internal primary process in Barcelona on 1 June to choose its candidate for the 2027 Barcelona municipal elections. The party aims to finish the process by 21 June, with several prominent figures already in the frame.

The move follows the departure of former municipal leader Xavier Trias in summer 2024. Since then, several names have been linked with the candidacy. Jordi Martí Galbis, the current municipal group president, has said he wants to lead the list. He said he would enter primaries if Josep Rius, councillor and Junts' number two, also stood.

Rius, who reportedly had the backing of President Carles Puigdemont, later withdrew his name. In a letter to party members, he said he wanted to avoid internal confrontations, according to Tot Barcelona. That left the field open for other contenders.

Lawyer Jaume Alonso Cuevillas has said he wants to run. MP Glòria Freixa and former minister Jaume Giró have also shown interest. Junts secretary general Jordi Turull has held meetings with the interested figures, the municipal group and district representatives to set out the next steps.

The process is due to run for 20 days. On 1 June, Junts will email its members and sympathisers in Barcelona city to tell them the selection process has started and to explain how to submit a pre-candidacy. Between 1 June and 3 June, people can notify the party by email if they want to stand.

The Barcelona politics process is overseen by the Municipal Territorial Commission for Barcelona, which includes two representatives from the National Executive Directorate, two from Junts' Barcelona Federation, and one representative from each of the city's 10 districts. Joan Ramon Casals, responsible for municipal policy, will chair the commission and has the casting vote if needed.

If primaries go ahead, members will vote online over the weekend of 20 and 21 June, from 10:00 on 20 June until 19:00 on 21 June. The party will announce the result at 20:00 on 21 June. Any appeal must be lodged within 24 hours, and the Electoral Syndicate must resolve it within one day before the candidate is formally confirmed.
