King’s personal telegram honours six young athletes in Barcelona at a prestigious ceremony hosted by the Fundación Princesa de Girona.
The event, presided over by Catalan President Salvador Illa, saw each recipient receive a congratulatory message signed by His Majesty King Felipe VI, marking a significant royal endorsement of grassroots sporting achievement.

Furthermore, it carried the personal backing of the monarch, alongside Queen Letizia and the foundation’s board. Consequently, the initiative aims to forge a stronger connection between the royal household and Spain’s emerging athletic stars. Each telegram began with the words: “In my name, in that of the Queen and in that of our daughter Leonor, the Princess of Asturias and Girona, it is a pleasure to express our congratulations…”
President Illa was accompanied by Government Delegate Carlos Prieto and the foundation’s president, Francisco Belil. The organisers, director Salva Tasqué and awards director Ingrid Aznar, were praised for their dedicated work. Meanwhile, a panel of distinguished journalists and former sporting legends presented the awards to the six honourees.
Celebrating A Diverse Array Of Talent
The young athletes recognised came from various disciplines, showcasing the breadth of talent in the country. Basque rhythmic gymnast Eneko Lambea was highlighted for his role in normalising male participation in his sport and challenging gender stereotypes. Galician skateboarder Julia Benedetti and Aragonese gymnast Inés Bergua were also celebrated for their accomplishments.
Additionally, the awards honoured athletes demonstrating remarkable resilience. Guillermo Gracia, a 27-time world champion in adapted swimming, shared his powerful motto: “my capacity is greater than my disability.” He was introduced by Paralympic swimmer Teresa Perales. The ceremony concluded with world champion water polo player Paula Leiton and Olympic race-walking medallist Valentí Massana acting as masters of ceremonies. The next step for the winners will be a reception with the King himself.
The event was covered by El Periódico, which also noted the poignant closure of the iconic Tramonti restaurant, a historic Barcelona establishment frequented by many celebrities and sports figures over the decades.
