La Florida 6.0 digital hub has become the symbolic centrepiece of L’Hospitalet’s ambitious urban transformation, a vision underscored by a royal visit this week.
King Felipe VI toured the innovative facility on Monday, describing it as a “vanguard bet for digital transformation in a zone with one of Europe’s highest densities.” The project, housed above a traditional municipal market, represents a key part of Mayor David Quirós’s strategy to decentralise the technological impetus from the Mobile World Congress towards the city’s northern neighbourhoods.
La Florida 6.0 Hub Aims for Metropolitan Impact
According to Mayor Quirós, the hub is designed to be “a service at the disposal of everyone.” Consequently, it will welcome residents, businesses, entrepreneurs, and entities when it reaches full operational capacity in early 2026.

The goal is to create a metropolitan reference space that helps dynamise the local environment. This initiative is particularly significant as L’Hospitalet, while being Catalonia’s second-largest economic contributor, grapples with stark social inequalities.
The northern area, known as Samontà, is home to half the city’s population. Furthermore, it concentrates 73% of residents in relative poverty. Therefore, the La Florida 6.0 digital hub serves as a tangible first step in a broader, 350-million-euro, 10-year master plan to revitalise this vulnerable district. The city council recently allocated an initial 15 million euros to kickstart this comprehensive social and urban cohesion project.
During his visit, the King noted the palpable “energy for change” within the city. This sentiment aligns with the local government’s drive to ensure the wealth generated in L’Hospitalet’s economic district benefits the entire community. The strategy includes fostering a biomedical cluster to strengthen the city’s role in southern Europe. The ultimate challenge, however, will be ensuring this economic growth has a direct and positive impact on the Samontà area.
This focus on equitable development mirrors broader regional housing concerns. For instance, recent efforts to secure affordable homes, such as the 170 homes secured by Catalonia amid a rent strike, highlight the pressing need for integrated social policies. The La Florida 6.0 digital hub is thus more than a tech centre; it is a cornerstone in L’Hospitalet’s century-long journey of metamorphosis, aiming to bridge the digital and social divide for its future.
